Dubai Awards Record AED1.4bn Contract for Storm Protection

Dubai has unveiled a massive AED1.4bn upgrade to its stormwater infrastructure that will boost the emirate’s drainage capabilities. The discharge capacity will increase by 700% over the next century. This bold initiative is part of the broader AED30 billion Tasreef project and stands as Dubai’s largest infrastructure project to date.

The project will revolutionize several vital areas through new drainage infrastructure. Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport vicinity, Al Garhoud, and Al Rashidiya will benefit from 36 kilometers of new drainage lines. The detailed infrastructure improvements will cut construction, operation, and maintenance costs of stormwater stations by 20%. Dubai’s resilience against flooding risks will improve significantly. This project showcases Dubai’s steadfast dedication to building environmentally responsible and climate-resilient infrastructure that supports its expanding urban development.

Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth AED1.439 billion to four trailblazing projects under the ‘Tasreef’ initiative. This marks a major advancement in strengthening the emirate’s flood resistance. Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, directed these contracts that will upgrade Dubai’s stormwater drainage infrastructure.

The projects will create more than 36 kilometers of new drainage lines. These lines will connect to the main Tasreef tunnel that will link drainage systems throughout the emirate. The improvements will benefit several key areas including Nad Al Hamar, areas near Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa.

His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality stated, “Tasreef is a pioneering, strategic, and transformative project implemented by Dubai Municipality as part of its efforts to develop advanced and eco-friendly infrastructure projects in line with the highest standards of urban and spatial planning”.

The Tasreef project, estimated at AED30 billion, stands as Dubai’s largest initiative of its kind. The completed project will boost the network’s discharge capacity by 700% over the next century. This enhancement will place the emirate among the world’s most resilient cities for infrastructure readiness.

The initiative will cut construction, operation, and maintenance costs of stormwater stations by 20%. This will extend the infrastructure’s lifespan. Dubai’s experience with unprecedented heavy rainfall led authorities to create this sustainable solution that protects the city from future climate challenges.

The rainwater drainage capacity through tunnels will reach 20 million cubic meters daily, with a flow capacity of 230 cubic meters per second. This makes it the region’s largest rainwater collection project in a single system. The Tasreef initiative will reach completion in phases by 2033.

Engineers Reveal How Tasreef Will Increase Drainage Capacity by 700%

Dubai’s ambitious Tasreef project engineers have revealed new technical specifications that will help the system achieve a 700% increase in drainage capacity over the next century. This major transformation will change how the emirate handles its stormwater and groundwater management.

The system will run on gravity through a tunnel network, which removes the need for many pumping stations. “Tasreef tunnel will connect all the drainage networks to pump stormwater to the sea,” explained Dr. Tamer Al Hafez, a senior specialist in drainage projects at Dubai Municipality. This design allows water to flow naturally and cuts operational and maintenance costs by 20%.

The project’s scale sets new records in the region. The completed infrastructure will boost Dubai’s daily rainwater drainage capacity to over 20 million cubic meters, and its tunnels will handle 230 cubic meters of water per second. The system will use some of the Middle East’s largest Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). These machines are known to work quickly and precisely in different ground conditions.

The tunnel network will run 40 to 60 meters below ground and will be built under main roads and highways to reduce disruption. This placement makes construction safer and more practical during both building and operation.

The system combines five essential components:

  • A complete groundwater and stormwater collection network
  • A 10km, 10m diameter tunnel at 45m depth
  • A water holding pond that could generate solar power in the future
  • High-efficiency pumping stations
  • A sea outfall system

The design includes sustainable urban drainage systems – a first for the region. This new approach will make the infrastructure budget-friendly and environmentally sound by controlling storm flows at their source instead of relying only on downstream solutions.

The team now studies the best tunnel routes to ensure water flows smoothly to the sea without hitting obstacles.

Contractors Begin Work on Four Major Drainage Projects Across Dubai

Dubai Municipality has started construction on four major stormwater drainage projects after awarding contracts worth AED1.439 billion. The ambitious Tasreef initiative’s first phase will transform the emirate’s drainage infrastructure.

The awarded contracts cover extensive work in several key Dubai districts. Contractors have started moving resources to build more than 36 kilometers of new drainage lines that will connect to the main Tasreef tunnel. The network expansion focuses on strategic areas including:

  • Nad Al Hamar and Dubai International Airport vicinity
  • Al Garhoud and Al Rashidiya
  • Al Quoz and Zabeel
  • Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa

“These newly initiated projects represent a key milestone in the implementation of the Tasreef project to develop and upgrade Dubai’s stormwater drainage network,” stated Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality.

The commissioned works provide eco-friendly solutions that alleviate flooding risks and enhance the existing networks’ efficiency. The drainage infrastructure in these target areas will increase capacity by a lot once completed. This improvement will reduce operational and maintenance costs and deliver better service standards to the emirate’s residents and businesses.

The construction phase marks a crucial step in Dubai’s broader infrastructure resilience plan. The emirate’s dedication to future-readiness matches global best practices in urban drainage management. The contractors use innovative approaches to merge the new drainage lines naturally with existing infrastructure.

After completing these original four projects, more phases will connect drainage systems throughout the emirate. This positions Dubai among the world’s most advanced cities for infrastructure preparedness.

Dubai’s AED1.4bn Tasreef project proves the emirate’s steadfast dedication to building reliable infrastructure. This complete drainage upgrade will reshape the city’s stormwater management with 36 kilometers of new drainage lines. The system will achieve a remarkable 700% increase in discharge capacity over the next century.

The project uses innovative engineering solutions that set new standards for infrastructure development in the region. Gravity-driven systems and advanced tunnel boring technology lead these innovations. The project’s smart implementation in Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport vicinity, and Al Garhoud will benefit residents and businesses greatly.

Dubai’s team has cut construction and maintenance costs by 20%, showing that major infrastructure projects can deliver results without excessive spending. The city now strengthens its position among global leaders in environmentally responsible urban development. This massive undertaking prepares Dubai for future environmental challenges and protects its expanding urban areas effectively.
