In a significant diplomatic event, His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, welcomed Li Qiang, Premier of the People’s Republic of China, at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi. This high-level meeting highlights the strong ties between the UAE and China, two nations that have cultivated a robust strategic partnership over the years.

The visit of Premier Li Qiang to the UAE marks a crucial step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. During the meeting, both leaders are expected to discuss ways to boost cooperation in various sectors, including trade, technology, and cultural exchange. This encounter also provides an opportunity to explore new avenues for collaboration and to reaffirm the commitment of both nations to their shared goals and mutual interests.

Official Welcome Ceremony at Qasr Al Watan

The official welcome ceremony for Premier Li Qiang took place in the awe-inspiring Great Hall of Qasr Al Watan. With its 37-meter diameter and soaring 60-meter central dome, the hall provided a majestic backdrop for the event. The space incorporated the palace’s signature colors of blue, white, and yellow, symbolizing the Arabian Gulf, purity, and desert sands respectively. Geometric shapes, including mirrored cubes and Arabesque patterns, created a visually stunning environment. Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid accompanied the Chinese Premier to inspect the guard of honor, while the UAE and Chinese national anthems played. The ceremony featured performances by Emirati folk groups and a 21-gun artillery salute, honoring the distinguished guest’s visit.

Strengthening UAE-China Bilateral Relations

The UAE and China have cultivated a robust strategic partnership over the past four decades, marked by significant milestones and mutual cooperation. The establishment of diplomatic ties in 1984 set the stage for a multifaceted relationship based on shared interests. A pivotal moment came in 1990 when the late Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became the first Gulf Cooperation Council head of state to make an official visit to China. This visit laid the foundation for the vibrant partnership that continues to deliver benefits to both nations. The relationship has grown exponentially, resulting in the signing of over 130 bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding. Recently, during Sheik Mohamed bin Zayed’s state visit to China, 19 new agreements were inked in key sectors, including tourism, industry, technology, and the Belt and Road Initiative. This underscores the ever-strengthening ties and mutual commitment to expanding collaborative efforts in various strategic areas.

Economic Ties and Trade Projections

The UAE and China have cultivated a robust economic partnership, with bilateral trade reaching unprecedented heights. By 2023, trade between the two nations amounted to approximately AED 348.85 billion. China has emerged as the UAE’s primary global trade partner, with non-oil trade exchange exceeding AED 264.39 billion in 2022 alone, marking an impressive 18 percent annual growth rate. This exponential growth, about 800 times the trade volume since 1984, underscores the depth of their economic engagement.

China’s exports to the UAE in 2023 totaled AED 204.46 billion, primarily consisting of electrical and electronic equipment, machinery, and vehicles. The UAE, in turn, has become China’s foremost trading partner in the Arab world and Gulf region. Both nations are forging a comprehensive ‘framework agreement’ spanning various sectors, including logistics, technology, and renewable energy. Chinese investments in the UAE focus on trade, finance, and real estate, with cumulative FDI reaching AED 43.62 billion between 2012 and 2022.

The meeting between Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Premier Li Qiang at Qasr Al Watan showcases the strong bond between the UAE and China. This high-level encounter highlights their commitment to boost cooperation in various fields, including trade, technology, and cultural exchange. The official welcome ceremony, with its grand setting and traditional elements, underscores the importance both nations place on their strategic partnership.

The economic ties between the UAE and China have grown dramatically, with China becoming the UAE’s top global trade partner.
